Jed's surrendering owners took Jed on approximately five months ago as a potential show jumping prospect. He was in an average body condition at the time, and they began to work him up and feed accordingly. After limited riding Jed was noticeably having trouble holding his body condition, and he was taken out of work when, despite all efforts, his poor condition persisted, and then worsened, Jed had shown a lot of promise over jumps, and his talented young rider was not only very disappointed, but extremely concerned for Jed's well-being. At that time, Jed's owners came and had a chat with me re their concern for Jed and his unexplained weight loss.
Jed was being spelled and fed-up when the recent flooding event in Victoria then impacted seriously upon his home. All yarding, feed stores and infrastructure was lost, and Jed's owners were really struggling to maintain their team of horses. Apparently his condition then dropped away dramatically after the flooding, and things just went from bad to worse.
A week ago Jed was discovered with a serious injury to his hoof/coronet. He sustained the injury whilst yarded, and his surrendering owners have no idea as to how it came about. Fortunately it was noticed immediately, as his bleeding was arterial and he was losing copious amounts of blood. The bleeding was stemmed, and his owners have been dressing the wound since.
Jed has been surrendered to Quest as his recovery from his injury will be very much a long-term prospect. His owners cannot afford to keep Jed fed and treated in the long-term when he is unrideable. Given their current circumstances, which are very difficult, Quest was their only option for Jed other than the knackery, and they hope that in time Jed will recover and make someone a lovely horse. It is expected that, at best, he will only ever be capable of pleasure riding upon his recovery.
Jude will attend Jed asap, and we will be in a better position to comment then on the nature and extent of his wound.

Apologies for the cruddy quality of this photo, but I just wanted to share just what a comfort our little Joy has turned out to be to the new boy. He is very stressed at the moment, and Joy seems to sense this. If she strays more than a few metres from the round yard Jed frets, and instead of wandering far and wide as she usually does, Joy is staying next to Jed for most of the day, on the other side of the rails from him. It is definitely not a case of her wanting the company, as she is such a confident little girl, and has never needed the reassurance of 'horsey' company.
Joy really seems to be an 'old soul' in a baby's body at times, there is so much that she seems to understand that is beyond what you'd expect for her age.

We discovered Jed's ASB details today, thanks to Nadine, one of our friends from our Facebook page. This is Jed's sire here: Desert King, who you'll notice, is also the sire of the amazing Makybe Diva! Great to also have Jed's foaling date, which is 12.09.02.
Here is the man today with his little off-sider, who he depends upon so much:
