Today's meeting was the official launch of the new jumps season, described earlier in the day as potentially the best in recent memory by Racing Victoria Chief Executive Rob Hines.

Casa Boy fell heavily over an obstacle at around the 1000 metre mark of a 3224-metre hurdle, smashing his offside shoulder.

The small crowd was hushed as the green screen was placed around the stricken horse, who was euthanised by the club veterinary surgeon.

Two other horses fell today but escaped injury.

Jumps Racing Association President Rodney Rae said: “For as long as jumps racing has been around there have been fatalities".

RIP HAMMERBOW

"Seven-year-old Hammerblow was put down after falling during a hurdle trial at Morphettville on Monday."

"Thoroughbred Racing SA CEO Jim Watters says the organisation remains committed to jumps racing in South Australia and keeps assessing the safety for both riders and horses."

"RSPCA chief executive officer Steve Lewis said SA needed to follow the lead of most other states and put an end to the sport.

"Thoroughbred Racing SA has blood on its hands today and must take responsibility for this latest tragedy."

The Greens have also called for SA to fall in line with states that have banned jumps racing. SA and Victoria are the only states where the practice is still allowed.

South Australian Greens MP Tammy Franks said Monday's death was likely to be one of many this year.

"Jumps racing is dangerous for both horses and jockeys," she said.

"The time for a long overdue and permanent ban in SA is now."

Ms Franks said the Greens supported the RSPCA's description of the sport as legalised cruelty and said it was time South Australia caught up with other Australian states."

RIP JAVA STAR

State president Sheree Sellick says it's only a matter of time before another serious injury or fatal fall occurs. "This is completely unacceptable. The RSPCA won't be satisfied with anything other than a complete ban of this so-called sport," she said. "Thoroughbred Racing South Australia and the Oakbank Racing Club must immediately remove jumps racing from the South Australian racing calendar and finally put an end to this legalised cruelty."

Oakbank Racing Club chairman John Glatz says the protesters are misguided. "We're becoming so urbanised in Australia that kids just don't understand what happens in the real world with animals," he said.

Thoroughbred Racing SA chairwoman Frances Nelson QC says the great spectacle of horse and rider is a major tourist attraction, an industry worth millions and a significant source of employment.

The Senate Select Committee on Animal Welfare raised "serious concerns about the welfare of horses participating in jumps races" back in 1991. It called on relevant state governments to phase out jumps races over the following three years but there was no change until NSW stopped jumps racing in 1997, followed a decade later by Tasmania. That leaves Victoria and South Australia. But it may not be long before things change in Victoria.

Racing Victoria Ltd and the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation (RIRDC) funded University of Melbourne research to assess the level of risk in 2008. Risk Factors Associated with Racetrack Casualties in Thoroughbreds was the first comprehensive post-mortem study of racetrack fatalities conducted in Australia.
The risk of a fatality was lower in flat starts (0.44 per 1000 starts) than in jump starts (8.3 per 1000 starts). That means the risk of death to a horse in jump racing was almost 19 times higher. Catastrophic limb injuries were 18 times more likely in jump races, cranial (head) or vertebral (back and neck) injury 121 times more likely, and sudden death (mostly from cardiovascular or respiratory failure) 3.5 times more likely.
The risk of death in Victoria was higher than in the UK and the US, but comparable to South Australia, where the fatality rate is 9.6 per 1000.

RIP SHINE THE ARMOUR

''Warrnambool, of course, is the killing fields for horses. That's how bad it is,'' Dr Wirth said. ''Every time they do something at Warrnambool there are deaths.''

Wirth turned the heat onto Premier Ted Baillieu after the third death in jumps racing this season. Casa Boy was put down after falling at the season's opener last month at Warrnambool as was Squire Rex after a Cranbourne trial last month. Two horses have also died in jumps races in South Australia this season.

''Our premier must take full responsibility for the death of Shine The Armour at Warrnambool today, as he is just sitting on the fence allowing these horses to be jumped to their death,'' Dr Wirth said.

''The Minister for Racing, Denis Napthine, has made it abundantly clear that money and tradition, not horse welfare, is the main priority for his department. This is a total disgrace given his standing as a veterinarian. It is time our Premier intervenes and stops allowing members of his cabinet to jeopardise the welfare of animals.''

Stop the Deaths, It's Time to Act

20/05/2011 by Tammy Franks MLC

The death of Fasilenko in race three of the Mt Gambier Steeplechase today has prompted Greens animal welfare spokesperson Tammy Franks to say 'enough is enough”.

Ms Franks said the Greens – who have long opposed jumps racing – are about to get much tougher in opposing it.

"We've had four race meets in South Australia this year and at every single one there's been a horse fatality,” Ms Franks said.

"This sport seems to have unlimited licence to kill and enough is enough.

"How many strikes do they get?”

Ms Franks said legislation already was being drafted and the Greens would seek to amend the Animal Welfare Act in the next sitting week of Parliament to ban this so-called 'sport'.

"Jumps racing has been banned across Australia and only SA and Victoria lag behind,” Ms Franks said.

"Jumps racing is deeply unpopular and it is time for people to express their opposition by lobbying their local members, Racing Minister Tom Kenyon, and Environment & Conservation Minister Paul Caica.

"The Greens' message to the public is to call, email and let your local member - Liberal, Labor or independent - know that you oppose this legalised cruelty and support the Greens' amendment to ban jumps racing in this state once and for all.”

Ms Franks will introduce her amendment in the next Parliamentary sitting week.

"Reschedule or prepare for the wake"

Jumps racing is hanging by a thread - Warrnambool. Unless that view from the hill improves, dramatically, the sport's heartland will be the catalyst for its demise."
